About This AI Online Course
Large language models and generative artificial intelligence are already disrupting mission and back-office operations across the U.S. Department of Defense.
These powerful technologies have already been integrated in DoD mission areas and offer the ability to rapidly analyze vast amounts of data—improving situational awareness, intelligence gathering and strategic decision advantage.
This online course provides a foundational understanding of how LLMs function, their core components, and their potential uses in DoD mission areas and in private-sector environments.
You will examine the mathematical and probabilistic nature of LLMs and GenAI—to better understand how they generate responses based on statistical predictions rather than true comprehension. We will also discuss their strengths and weaknesses and why human oversight is vital.
A central focus of this online course is to understand LLMs as tools and how they serve as interfaces for human interaction, assist with language-based reasoning and act as knowledge repositories. You will also be introduced to key prompt engineering concepts and how iterative refinements can improve AI-generated responses.
We will also review descriptions of LLM and GenAI implementations in both the DoD and the private sector. We will cover the role of AI in productivity, research, and workflow automation, as well as the emerging marketplace of AI-powered applications, such as OpenAI’s Custom GPT Shop. Our discussion will extend to the integration of AI in organizational processes, the potential for AI-driven assistants and beyond.
The course components include viewing a video (source: Naval Postgraduate School) and then participating in a virtual group activity to apply your new knowledge and taking an short, graded quiz. After successfully completing all requirements, you can download a certificate of course completion.
By the end of this course, you will possess a stronger understanding of LLMs and GenAI and how these technology solutions are already impacting the DoD and how their influence will only continue to rapidly advance in the future.
What You Will Learn
